ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS
Rooted In Faith, Growing in Knowledge
OVERVIEW OF THE 2018-2019 ATHLETIC PROGRAM:
During the upcoming 2018-19 school year, the SJCPS Athletic Program will again offer interscholastic teams for boys and girls in grades five through eight. The success of the Athletic Association's program through the years can be attributed to effective leadership, encouragement by parish staff, and, most importantly, the tremendous support of our parents- not only financially but in acting as volunteer coaches. We are currently in need of coaches and board members. Please contact Mr. Carl Rhineberger, Athletic Association Director, for more information (708-567-0585). (Anyone wishing to be considered to coach must submit to a criminal background check & complete the Virtus Training, Mandated Reporter Training, Concussion Training and required forms prior to coaching. This is a requirement of both the Archdiocese and the Parish.)
St. John of the Cross Parish School Athletic Association is a long-time member of the Suburban Parochial League (SPL), which is comprised of area Catholic grade schools. Since the SPL requires that the number of teams at each grade level be determined and submitted this spring, THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR ALL 2018-2019 SPORTS IS MAY 31st. There are three options you may use to register: pay by check, pay online or pay as you go with Smart Tuition. See page three for further information on all of the registration options.
REFUND POLICY: Fees will be refunded per the following policy: Fee will not be reimbursed after tryouts for basketball and volleyball; or after the second week of practice for cross country and track & field; or after uniforms are ordered for cheerleading and football; or after the first session of camps and clinics.
PARENT VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENT:
Every family whose child(ren) participate(s) in volleyball and/or basketball will be responsible for volunteering during at least two home games per season. Every family whose child(ren) participate(s) in cross country and/or track & field will be responsible for at least two volunteering experiences. Every family whose child(ren) participate in cheerleading or football will be expected to volunteer on a specified committee. Details will be provided when each sport begins for the year.
All student athletes must have a current Sports Physical (administered between May 1st and August 1st, 2018) and Medical Emergency Form on file in the school office by August 1st if they plan to participate in any sport during the entire school year. Physicals received after August 1st may delay your child's clearance for participation in SJC athletics. Please note: We will NOT be providing Sports Physicals this May for the upcoming school year.
All Basketball and Volleyball participants will be required to provide a uniform deposit in the amount of $65. All Football participants will be required to provide a uniform deposit in the amount of $250. The deposits must be paid in a check made payable to St. John of the Cross and must be a separate check if you are paying your fees by check. The checks are held until the end of the season. Deposit checks will be destroyed once uniforms are returned, or cashed if uniforms are not returned or returned in a condition which renders them no longer useable.
All cheerleading participants will be required to purchase a uniform (includes skirt, shell, briefs and pom-poms) for $90; the uniform is kept by the athlete to be used from year-to-year. There will be a MANDATORY cheer tryout/clinic held with a stunting coach. Girls who do not attend the clinic will not be allowed to stunt. At the clinic, we will also size the cheerleaders for uniforms. If you do not attend the clinic, you will not be guaranteed a uniform for the fall. The dates for these tryouts/ clinics will be announced at a later date.

THREE WAYS TO REGISTER (see sidebar for links)
1. PAY ONLINE
Go to the school website and click on the Athletics drop down menu. Choose “Registration” and then choose “Athletic On-line Registration and Payment.” This will take you to the secure payment website. There is a 3% transaction fee for credit card payments. There is no fee for ACH payments. Repeat the process for each child participating in sports
Use the Registration and Payment Form which can be found on the school website. From the Athletics drop down menu, choose “Registration” and then choose “Athletic Registration and Payment by Check.” Fill out the form and drop it off or mail it in with a check. You must include a Registration Form for each child participating in sports.
3. PAY-AS-YOU-GO WITH SMART TUITION - Only Available until 5/31/18
With this option, you may wait to pay for the sport until the month before the sport begins. The payment will be added to your Smart Tuition account and will be automatically billed to you a month before the start of the sport. For example, your child’s $70 track and field fee will be added to your February Smart Tuition bill. However, if you do not pay the full amount (tuition plus sport fee) by the due date, a late fee of $40 will be charged. Smart Tuition can be used for uniform payments, but cannot be used for uniform deposits.
PLEASE NOTE: No matter which option you choose, you must write a separate check for uniform deposits. The football uniform deposit is $250. The basketball/volleyball uniform deposit it $65. These checks may not be combined with registration fees nor with another deposit.
