December Newsletter for Fifth Grade Science
Mrs. Ann Linehan – Teacher
December will be a short school month, but we will be accomplishing quite a bit in science class.
Students are finishing up our unit on the Periodic Table of Elements and that matter is made up of particles that are too small to be seen.
We will continue with chapter 1 that includes:
- Comparing and contrasting the properties of solids, liquids and gases
- Measuring properties of states of matter
- Identifying phase changes of matter
- Investigating properties of solutions
- Comparing physical and chemical changes
- Graphing and charting data
- Participating in lab on Thursdays
Chapter 1 is long and includes 5 lessons. With so many events coming up in the month I’m not certain we will be able to complete it before the holidays. I do expect that students will finish their vocabulary words and plan a test on Tuesday, December 18. There are 16 vocabulary words for this chapter and the test will spiral back to include some of our previous words. It is important for students to STUDY the words, and prepare for the test.
We will be heading to the Museum of Science and Industry for a field trip on Wednesday, December 19. We are so fortunate to have such an inspiring museum in our back yard! There are so many exhibits that are included with the admission that we do not need to, nor do we have the time for any of the special fee based presentations. Hopefully you can take your child to those during the holiday break. They are action packed and educational for all ages!
Please check the school website often for upcoming events in general, and your child’s homeroom teacher’s newsletter for other specific 5th grade information.
Please email me at email@example.com if you need to reach me. Do not respond to the Power School email address. It disappears into cyberspace.
I wish you and your family a safe, fun and blessed holiday season.
