The new textbook for sixth grade this year is Go Math! Middle School Grade 6 Accelerated by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The purpose of this new version is to better prepare students for the accelerated 7th grade math level and to better prepare them for junior-high math. The sixth grade lessons begin with integers, a topic that will be very important to their success as a math student. Students will work with rational numbers, factors, and multiples, that will build the foundation for their work with rates and ratios. Operations with decimals and fractions are more formalized this year. Students will continue to work with area and perimeter and learn how to calculate surface area and volume of various polygons and solids. Students will also work on analyzing and displaying data. Every lesson has both skill practice and problem solving, including multi-step problems. The skills that are covered in sixth grade are as follows:
- Integers
- Factors and Multiples
- Rational Numbers
- Operations with Fractions
- Operations with Decimals
- Ratios and Rates
- Percents
- Numerical Expressions & Equations
