Welcome back to SJC! I hope you all had a wonderful summer. I am looking forward to meeting everyone on the first day of school. I have a passion for science and am excited to explore the world and the gifts God gave us with your child(ren). I hope, as the year progresses, to awaken a love for science and the world around us within your child.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions and concerns you may have. I encourage your child(ren) to do the same. Your child’s learning and growth are important to me. My email address is email@example.com.
Tonight, Aug. 20, is Meet the Teacher Night. Please stop in room 115, between 7:00-8:00 pm, to meet me and see the 7th and 8th-grade science room. Wednesday, Aug. 21st is our first full day of school.
During the months of August and September, we will explore the way a scientist thinks and behaves. We will review the scientific method as a way to solve problems and apply it to our everyday lives as we review how to write a lab report. We will review lab safety with a fun Lab Safety Escape Challenge. We will demonstrate our safety knowledge with an art project. We will apply scientific principals to explain why scientists use a standard measurement and use mathematical representations to identify the SI units of measure for length, mass, volume, density, time, and temperature.
Into September we will begin our introduction to matter. We will apply scientific ideas to identify the properties used to describe matter, develop and use models to describe what makes up the matter and describe the properties of a mixture. We will describe the units used to measure mass and volume and construct an explanation for how to determine the density of a material. Lastly, we will examine the changes in matter. We will develop and use models to explain what a physical change is, what a chemical change is, and to describe how energy changes when the matter changes.
Below you will find some helpful links to the physical science syllabus, procedures, curriculum, and the new 2018 snack list. On the first day of school, a hard copy of the physical science syllabus will be sent home. Please review the syllabus with your child(ren), sign, and return the parent/student signature page.
I look forward to sharing a wonderful year of exploration and discovery of the world around us with your child.
