November will find SJC scientists exploring atomic forces and chemical bonds. We will examine trends in the Periodic Table and discover what determines an elements chemistry. We will describe how ions form, explain how the formulas and names of ionic compounds are written and identify the properties of ionic compounds. We will use models to describe how atoms are held together in a covalent bond, identify properties of molecular compounds and explain how bonded atoms become partially charged. Lastly, we’ll develop and use models to describe the structure of a metal crystal and identify the properties of metals. As always, students will be provided with many hands-on experiences to strengthen and solidify their understanding of the physical science concepts taught this month.
