Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
Spring has arrived! We finally celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of the season, which coincides with the abundance of end of the year activities which we encounter these final few weeks of school.
First, however, I would like to congratulate Mrs. Jennifer Miller and her cast of students in grades 5-8 for a job well done in Schoolhouse Rock, the school play. A tremendous amount of energy and talent were displayed on stage this past weekend. Of course, our parent helpers also did their part in making the play a success. Thank you all for a job well done!
Aspire and MAP Testing
We just completed the Aspire testing this past week in grades 3-8. We will not have student results before summer vacation begins. As in previous years, we will push them out through Power School to the parents when available. Our 8th grade results will be mailed to families and copies of the results sent to the high schools. Our children in grades Kindergarten – 2 complete the MAP testing this week. MAP is designed to illustrate the children’s academic growth throughout the year. Parents will receive the results before the end of the school year.
8th Grade End of the Year
As we approach May, our 8th grade ends their academics here at SJC within the next few weeks. We will be sad to say good bye, but know they are ready to tackle the next step of their life’s journey. They excitedly anticipate the May Crowning on 5/14 at 11 AM in the church. Our 8th grade student with her court crowns the Blessed Mother, followed by the Ribbon Ceremony, a celebration of each individual graduate. Students participate in the infamous Memorial Games on Friday, 5/18. For families new to SJC, Memorial Games is a longstanding tradition. The intent of Memorial Games brings the students closer together as they compete in basketball with their peers from different homerooms. Homerooms also create skits and songs based upon the theme created by the homeroom. The games begin at 1 PM that Friday and extend through the evening. Besides the games, raffle ticket sale begins on 5/14 for the many prizes. You will receive information from the parent volunteers regarding the raffles, and the children may purchase tickets during their lunches that week. Then, our 8th grade meets on 5/29 with the rest of the student body in the gym at 9:15 AM for the school to recognize their accomplishments this year. That evening, the 8th grade gathers together in the gym for their Awards Ceremony. Finally, 8th grade celebrates one last time as a class of SJC at the 5 PM liturgy on 5/31, followed by the Commencement Ceremony. Having watched them grow over the years, we are very proud of our students, their overall accomplishments, and how they have matured into young teens. We wish our students well! Many thanks to the families for their support of Catholic education.
As we approach May, we excitedly prepare our 2nd grade for their First Communion. The children and their families celebrate the sacrament either 5/5 or 5/12. Please keep the children in your prayers.
Our 6th grade parents and students are required to attend a sacramental meeting on either 5/14 or 5/22, where Mrs. Janet Cashetta, Youth Catechesis Director, Mrs. Laurie Smilie, Parish Sacramental Coordinator, and Mrs. Kathleen Gorman, School Principal, will inform parents about the children’s Confirmation Program. It begins now and concludes as 8th graders. We look forward to walking with you on this journey.
End of the Year Activities
Many other end of the year activities occur over the next few weeks. Teachers plan end of the year field trips, so please be aware of any information your child may bring home. Other key dates include the Band/Choir Concert on 5/2, showcasing our Fine Arts Program and Spotlight on SJC at 7 PM on 5/9 allows for an evening with parents to walk around the school and view their child/ren’s accomplishments from this school year. Students, of course, are welcome as well. Parent Association provides ice cream treats as you leave the building. A special event occurs on 5/21 for Father David in an assembly with the children. Our 1st grade Author’s Day on 5/25 demonstrates the children’s growth in reading and writing throughout the year. We also celebrate with our 3-year Preschool Picnic on 5/30, the 4-year Preschool Celebration on 5/31 and our Kindergarten celebration on 6/1, successfully marking the end of the year for the children. Please check the calendar for any and all information regarding end of the year activities.
We look forward to seeing our families throughout the month of May, celebrating your children.
There continue to be students absent with cold symptoms and the stomach bug, but the numbers are, thankfully, much lower. However, spring allergy season is in full swing. If your child is having a difficult time with allergies/asthma, please let the Nurse know. Please review her newsletter on the website for more information.
TIME, TALENT, TREASURE

- We continue to keep Rachael Schopp and Father David in our prayers each day.
- Mrs. Sue Bak continues to recuperate from her recent surgery. Please keep her in your prayers.
