Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
Gazing outside at the beautiful, warm, sunny summer days, I find it difficult to believe that school begins in a few short weeks. What happened to the summer? Hopefully, it rejuvenated everyone. With a new school year comes the growing sense of excitement and anticipation that a new year brings.

SOLAR ECLIPSE ON AUGUST 21ST
Our Science Department at SJC recently sent a blast to parents inviting any child with a parent to learn more about the solar eclipse, which takes place on the afternoon of 8/21. Families may meet with the science teachers in the MPR between 12:00-3:00 PM. Please check in at the table set up by door 3. At that time, the science teachers will have activities which the children may do. They will provide special glasses to view the eclipse. WE WILL NOT TAKE THE CHILDREN OUTSIDE TO VIEW THE SOLAR ECLIPSE. THAT IS THE SOLE DISCRETION OF THE PARENT. Please note, a solar eclipse is dangerous to view without these special glasses.
The Thomas Ford Library scheduled a speaker from Adler Planetarium on 8/7 at 7 PM. Michelle Nicholas, Master Educator, will present more information about the solar eclipse.
PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN
As we do at the start of each school year, we remind our parents that you must complete each step of the “Protecting God’s Children Safe Schools Program” before you are allowed to volunteer in the building. This procedure is mandated by the Archdiocese of Chicago and keeps our children safe. All parents must complete a new CANTS form each year and sign a Code of Conduct. Both forms must be returned to the school office. For information regarding the program, please contact Mrs. Wingert at firstname.lastname@example.org or 708-246-4454.
As we do each year, we welcome new staff members to our school family. Mrs. Maggie Serafini, a former SJC student with six years’ experience teaching 2nd grade at St. Benedict, looks forward to joining us as a 2nd grade teacher. Miss Emily Roeper will move to 7th grade as the homeroom teacher and 7th grade Math teacher. Mr. Fred Reynolds takes on the Technology Coach position and brings a wealth of technology experience to SJC from Seton Academy in South Holland and, most recently, Bishop Noll Institute in Indiana, where he taught technology classes, implemented a number of technology initiatives, and trained/coached teachers with technology integration. Mrs. Sarah Kline, who previously held that position, decided to return to the 4th grade homeroom. Mrs. Ann Linehan will move to 5th grade and teach Science. Of course, you are familiar with Mr. Andrew Rankin, who did a great job with his long term subbing at the conclusion of this past school year for Mrs. Risch, He will enrich the lives of our students in music education. Another familiar face joins SJC once again. Mrs. Diane Sellinger enthusiastically returns to teach the 7th and 8th grade Science classes as a 7th grade homeroom teacher. We look forward to the expertise and passion for education and children that each individual brings to SJC. Welcome!
TIME, TALENT, TREASURE
We remind our parents to include any volunteer hours online since the start of the summer.
We will send the children’s Aspire test scores home to you as the school year begins. We will send an email blast to you indicating how and when the results will be sent home.
Our website will change its look in the next several weeks. Mrs. Tisa will send information to families indicating how you will be able to sign into the new family dashboard, now needed each time you view the website. This new security measure is another means of protecting our children and families.
Each year, we give parents an opportunity to meet with the grade level teachers where the teachers communicate grade level expectations. Those evenings begin with a short presentation by the principal in the gym at 6:30-6:55 PM regarding school changes, testing, goals, etc. Then there will be two sessions for each grade level – 7:00-7:30 and 7:30-8:00. The second session is a repeat of the information provided in the first session. The schedule for 2017 is as follows:
Thursday, 8/24/17 Grades 1 and 2
Tuesday. 8/29/17 Grades 3 and 4
Thursday, 9/7/17 Grades 5, 6, 7, 8
Grade 3 parents receive a tutorial on the Parent Portal for Power School and Grade 4 parents meet for a mandatory iPad meeting before rolling out the one to one iPad usage in grade 4. Rooms TBD.
Please enter through the main door and we will post the location of the meetings.
We had asbestos abated this summer by a licensed asbestos contractor. The original school boiler needed to be replaced; therefore, it was necessary to remove asbestos from the boiler room. The asbestos removal was contained to the basement and no one was allowed there. Air quality samples were taken by a licensed monitoring company who gave us clearance to utilize the area once again. Further details of this project are located in the front office.
Please enjoy the final days of summer. Be safe. We look forward to seeing everyone soon. God’s Blessings to all our SJC families!
