Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
This last week of January certainly presented all of us with unprecedented temperature challenges. I personally would like to commend my entire staff for their selfless devotion to your children. They kept a loving eye on them, monitored classroom temperatures closely, and informed the children of the dangers of exposure to the frigid conditions. Although the sun shone these last few days, we wanted to stress the importance of keeping warm and staying inside where it was safe during this polar vortex.
Now that the last two days have passed, we must look at our calendar moving forward. The Archdiocese of Chicago has decided to allow these last two days as snow day exceptions and we do not need to make up the days. SJC still has the required days needed for Nonpublic School Recognition through the State of Illinois. Our calendar moving forward will remain unchanged this school year unless other snow days are needed.
As it was, the two lost days occurred during Catholic Schools Week. Although this has always been a highlight of Catholic schools in celebrating our identity, we are confident that this celebration occurs daily here at St. John of the Cross Parish School. Each day we model our mission to the children. Thank you parents for also supporting the mission of Catholic schools. The mere fact that you have registered your children here at SJC reflects your belief in who we are. At this time, we will begin the registration process for the 2019-2020 school year. We ask you to complete the registration by 3/1/19. You will be sent an email blast with instructions. Registration assists us in planning the budget and tuition for next school year. If you are not planning to return to SJC, please open the registration form and complete the needed information.
The culmination of Catholic Schools Week occurs on Saturday, 2/2/19, with our 8th grade celebrating the sacrament of Confirmation. What a wonderful way to affirm St. John of the Cross Parish School and young Catholics in today’s society by concluding this celebrated week with the essence of who we are through our sacramental program. Bishop Manz will preside for the sacrament. Our young people look excitedly toward this day as they recognize their responsibility as Catholics and the journey that Jesus sets before them. Please keep them in your prayers.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Optional Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled on Thursday, 2/14/19. All children will be dismissed at noon. Conferences take place 1-4 PM and 5-8 PM. We will not offer conferences on Friday, 2/15/19. In the past, all our teachers were present on the second day, but very few families took advantage of it. If you need to speak with your child/ren’s teacher and cannot find time in one of the time slots on 2/14, please contact your child/ren’s teacher. The conference scheduling will be sent out today or Monday.
Thank you for your continued support of Catholic education here at St. John of the Cross Parish School. God bless you.
Nazareth Academy has extended an invitation to our parents on 2/26/19 regarding an upcoming Parent Informational Evening on vaping and its use among our youth in epidemic proportions. The event addresses the concerns: What is vaping? Why is it a problem? What should I as a parent look for? The evening takes place at Nazareth’s Media Center, 1209 West Ogden Road, at 7 PM. If you have any questions, you may contact Cathy Kokontis at 708-367-8535. We strongly recommend attendance at this event, especially for our Junior High parents.
FATHER MCDONNELL SCHOLARSHIP
Our parish tradition believes in the faith filled academic programs here at SJC. Many families want to continue providing their children with Catholic education. The SJC Women’s Club offers scholarships for any 8th grade student planning to attend a Catholic High School next year. Please refer to the parish website (see this link) for information regarding the application process and its requirements. The deadline to apply is 2/11/19.
SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD
The School Advisory Board (SAB) put together a survey which we will send to parents within the week. We are asking your input on several different aspects of SJC, which include Catholic Identity, Academics, Governance, Financial/Fundraising, Facilities and Extracurricular. The purpose of this survey is to gather information and put together a financial plan moving forward. We appreciate your input and ask that you complete it when you receive it as it only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Thank you for your input!
If anyone is interested in learning about the three year responsibilities of being a School Advisory Board member, please contact Julie Krema at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are experiencing lower than usual numbers of students with illness. There are cases of influenza, strep throat, and the stomach bug among the student population. Thank you to parents for keeping those with symptoms at home and for picking up promptly when students become ill at school. By limiting the exposure, we are keeping many others well. Please continue to review the Nurse’s newsletters on the website for more details and contact your physician or Mrs. Petersen with questions.
School will not be in session on Friday, 2/15/19 for Staff Development, and Monday, 2/18/19 in celebration of Presidents’ Day.
2nd Trimester concludes on 3/1/19.
TIME, TALENT, TREASURE
Any time you volunteer in the school for any event, please take the time to complete the Time Talent and Treasure form on the website in the Parent Portal. You must log your hours before 5/15/19 to qualify for the 2019-2020 parish subsidy. If you plan on volunteering for Celebrate SJC Day, you may add that to the form on the website since you will not have access to the form after 5/15/19. The portal will shut down at that time and will not open again until mid-June.
PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN
We remind our parents that you must complete each step of the “Protecting God’s Children Safe Schools Program” before you are allowed to volunteer in the building. This procedure is mandated by the Archdiocese of Chicago and keeps our children safe. All parents must complete a new CANTS form each year. Please return the completed form to the school office. It is crucial that you complete these requirements if you want to volunteer in the school or coach any of the sports teams.
For information regarding the program, please contact Mrs. Wingert at email@example.com or 708-246-4454.
