•We just completed our session on verbs and will spend the rest of the month focusing on adverbs and a review of prepositions. All grammar skills will be reinforced with Daily Oral Language and IXL exercises.
•I have asked the students to bring in a biography by January 16, in preparation for our next book report, which will be due in mid-February.
•I will take time during the last two weeks of January to teach skills that will prepare them for completion of an informative research paper which will be assigned later in the year. These skills include organizing information, paraphrasing, incorporating citations, and adding name/number detail.
•We will also be completing a unit on figurative language using a packet giving lessons on personification, similes and metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole.
•I am encouraged by their progress in recognition of main ideas in fiction and nonfiction passages. We will continue our practice of beginning each afternoon with a reading comprehension “warm-up.”
•In Wonders, we continue our analysis of all genres of literature. Last week, we read two expository texts and outlined the main ideas of each and identified text features. Next week we will study persuasive articles, and we will conclude our month with the study of a play.
