In January, the 8th Grade scientists will explore DNA. We begin our studies by developing and using a model to describe the structure of DNA and constructing a scientific explanation to describe how DNA copies itself. We will develop and use a model to describe how a cell produces proteins. We will explore mutations by applying scientific principles to identify how mutations can affect an organism and develop and use models to explain how cancer is related to mutations and the cell cycle. As the month comes to an end we will identify some patterns of inheritance in humans and describe the function of the sex chromosomes. Lastly, we will explore advances in genetics. As always, students will be presented with many opportunities to explore our scientific concepts with hands-on experimentation to strengthen and solidify their understanding of life science.
