In February, the 8th Grade scientists will explore Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. We begin our studies by investigating how Darwin’s observations helped him develop his hypothesis on evolution and construct a scientific explanation for how natural selection leads to evolution. Next, we will apply scientific principles to identify evidence that supports the theory of evolution. Towards the end of the month, we will begin classifying life. We will examine why biologists classify organisms and why they are assigned scientific names. We will use graphical displays to describe the organization of the levels of classification and construct an argument to explain how taxonomic keys are useful. As always, students will be presented with many opportunities to explore our scientific concepts with hands-on experimentation to strengthen and solidify their understanding of life science.
