In November the 8th Grade scientists will explore genetics and heredity. We will evaluate Mendel’s experimental design, describe the results of his experiments, and describe the role of alleles in the inheritance of traits. We will define probability and describe how it helps explain the results of genetic crosses, and explain what is meant by phenotype and genotype. We will describe at least three complex patterns of inheritance and discuss how characteristics result from inheritance and environmental factors. Lastly, we will describe the role chromosomes and genes play in inheritance and identify the events that occur during meiosis and fertilization. As always, students will be presented with many opportunities to explore our scientific concepts with hands-on experimentation to strengthen and solidify their understanding of life science.
