Our network infrastructure and technology curriculum is updated continuously to provide our students the best possible experience. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum in grades PreK – 8 preparing our students for high school and beyond.
What’s New at St. John of the Cross
Genius Hour: This class for grades 6 – 8 provides an opportunity for independent learning modeled after Google’s 20% time policy. Genius Hour integrates authentic technology lessons using Chromebooks and motivates our students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners.
Robotics: This weekly class for grades 6 – 8 allows students to experience coding, robotics, and creative exploration. The curriculum uses snap circuits, robots, and Lego Education. Robotics is also integrated into younger grade levels throughout the year.
Coding: Students participate in Hour of Code as well as a coding curriculum offered in their Technology Classes using Code.org and Kahn Academy.
1:1 iPad Program
iPads are used in all grades PreK – 8. Our 4 – 8 grade students participate in a 1:1 iPad program utilizing a school-provided, personal, device both at home and at school. Students use Google Apps for education, online personalized learning tools, digital textbooks, and other apps for creative and collaborative learning.
Technology in the Classroom
Many resources are available to teachers and staff to enhance their curriculum and provide differentiated and personalized learning. Teachers continue to improve their own learning through many different kinds of professional development opportunities offered both on and off site.
Students have access to iPads, laptops, iPods, and Chromebooks at different grade levels. They are able to share their work through Airplay and Apple TV.
Learning Resource Center: This collaborative space supports both project based learning and technology integration. Students use Accelerated Reader and Alexandria software to enhance their library time. Chromebooks are utilized to differentiate a student’s technology exposure.
Technology Room: Our full-time computer teacher uses MacBooks to teach basic skills including keyboarding, Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, Word, and Google Apps for Education. She collaborates with grade level teachers to enhance classroom instruction.
We employ a full-time technology staff to support our 21st century learners. Our staff includes a technology coordinator, technology teacher, technology coach, and technology assistant.
