The Book of Numbers
While it’s a fairly short distance from Egypt to Israel, it took the ancient Jews 40 years to reach the Promised Land. Numbers, the fourth book of the Torah tells us why.
The Israelites' disobedience and lack of faith causes God to make them wander in the desert until all the people of that generation had died--with a few important exceptions. The book draws its name from the census Moses made of the people, and it might have remained yet another bleak account of the Israelites' stubbornness were it not outweighed by God's faithfulness and protection.
