Volunteer

Parishioners volunteer their time and talents through a wide variety of organizations, providing assistance to the homeless, the elderly, and those experiencing tough times.

Watch for Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities in the list on the Left.

There are many opportunities throughout the year with organizations such as:
  • Aging Care ConnectionsPrograms and services offered to older adults, providing opportunity for them to share their knowledge and experiences and receive the assistance they need to remain vital members of the community.
  • Catholic Charities: Volunteer with Catholic Charities to bring help and hope to individuals and families through Catholic Charities programs in Cicero, downtown or throughout the Chicagoland area
    • Clothing Room – Volunteers are needed to work once monthly for 2-3 hours a week (usually Tuesdays, 9:00 – 11:30am) to sort clothing donations at Catholic Charities in Cicero.
  • B.E.D.S.: Transitional housing for area homeless. Parishioners help by providing meals and doing laundry. Contact: Lisa DenBesten ladenbesten@cs.com or 708-246-1361
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry: New and experienced knitters gather the second Wednesday of each month to knit shawls for the sick and homebound. Contact Alice Myers at 708.246.0127
  • Prayer Blankets: Make a no-sew fleece prayer blanket for an ill adult at the RML Specialty Hospital in Burr Ridge.Contact Debbie Pusinelli in the YC Office for a blanket pattern at pusinelli@sjc.pvt.k12.il.us or 246-6760 x251
  • Interfaith Community Partners: Transportation and support services for seniors; training provided.
  • Helping Hand Center: Services to assist people with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence. Programs include speech, occupational, vocational and job training, as well as assistance with residential housing. Contact: Bill Bright bbright@stjohnofthecross.org or 708-246-4404
  • Interfaith Career Network Group: a fellowship of men and women with a common desire to become employed or seek career advancement through a Chirstian forum. All programs are open to everyone and there are no dues or fees for membership. Go to www.interfaithcareernetwork.org for upcoming programs.
  • Volunteer at the LaGrange Nurses Association Carousel Thrift Shop: Help is needed everyday Monday through Saturday 10am –6pm bagging and hanging clothes and organizing the shop.   • Connie’s Kitchen (Constance Morris House) – Make a meal for residents of the Constance Morris House, a shelter for women and children run by Pillars. You or your group can select a specific Saturday to prepare a full evening meal for 7-18 shelter residents.   • Off the Street Club: The oldest boys and girls club in Chicago.  Serving over 3,000 youth a year, the club was founded 1900 on one basic principle:  to get inner-city children “off the streets” and away from the constant dangers of gangs, drugs, high crime and violence.
