Second Grade Newsletter #37, May 14 – 18
This morning we honored Mary during the May Crowning ceremony. Hopefully the children will use some of the rosaries they received for First Communion to pray during this special month of Mary. Thanks so much to all those volunteers who were able to help us get dressed in our uniforms after the ceremony. As with so many other things here at SJC, we couldn’t have done it without you!
Be sure to read Mrs. Gorman’s Principal Newsletter for May, located on the SJC web site under the “Academics” tab. It contains important information about the many upcoming events during our final few weeks of school. There were many important notes in the Friday Folder last week. Be sure you took time to look at them all.
Now would be a good time to locate the Everyday Math Reference Books that were sent home with you “on loan” at the beginning of the year. All books must be returned no later than May 25 and may be sent in any time before then. We hope they have helped you with any questions you may have had about the math program, especially the homework assignments.
On Wednesday a representative from the Thomas Ford Library will be speaking with the students about the summer reading activities being planned at all area libraries this year.
On Friday our eighth graders will be participating in the annual Memorial Games. This is a long-standing tradition, unique to St. John of the Cross, through which the graduating class collects money to leave a memorial gift to the school. On Friday afternoon we will have fun watching the eighth graders’ original skits and dances, then cheering for the teams during a basketball game. The games continue at night, with food available for sale. Raffle tickets for some really great prizes will be sold during lunch time all this week – $1 a ticket or 6 for $5. Friday is a casual, out-of-uniform day.
Religion
On Monday we will celebrate May Crowning. We will be discussing how Jesus wants us to love one another and how we show that during the Sign of Peace.
Math
In Unit 12 in Everyday Math, we will be working on “harder” multiplication facts, reviewing time, and comparing quantities from a bar graph.
Science
Creating our Australian landforms.

Phonics: /er/ spelled er, or, ear, ir, ur, and ure Comprehension: Identify lessons taught in stories; Author’s craft: proverbs
Book Clubs
Introduce the book Josefina Learns a Lesson by Valerie Tripp. This book is about a girl who grows up in New Mexico in 1824. At the beginning, we learn that Josefina’s mother died about a year earlier and her aunt, Tia Dolores, has come to teach Josefina and her three older sisters how to run the household. Her aunt wants to teach the girls how to read and write. Josefina is torn – will learning to read pull her away from her mother like her sister Francisca claims? The answer shows how the power of reading and writing can connect people across time and distance.
Writing
Students write a Last Look page for their Super Magazine. They will also assemble and share their magazine with classmates and teachers.
Cursive
Continue learning upper case letters in cursive.
Social Studies
Continue our study of the continent of Australia, focusing on landforms.
