Technology at SJC
Technology at St. John of the Cross continues to grow. The new network infrastructure provides SJC students and staff with fast internet access through the 100mbps fiber optic line. The school has both wired and wireless networks that provide a safe use of technology and filtered internet access.
Every classroom is equipped with a projector and an Elmo document camera that serves as a visual aid for all students to see content and material. The projector is the single source of video and connects to the classroom DVD player, computer or iPad. It allows the teacher the ability to quickly display videos, text and images from a computer or other external video source. The larger display of images makes it easier for all students to view. Many classrooms are equipped with SmartBoards and all classrooms have access to a shared space where a SmartBoard is readily available.
Our students use Apple iMacs in our dedicated computer lab where they learn basic computer skills such as keyboarding, word processing and internet search skills. After developing these skills they move on to learn advanced software programs including PhotoShop, Google Sketch Up, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Their new skills are incorporated into student created multimedia presentations. Students save their work on our student server where it can be accessed from any classroom computer in our building.
The Learning Resource Center is also equipped with student computers where students use the Accelerated Reader Program and Alexandria Software. Alexandria has helped to make our library user friendly and efficient for both students and faculty. All students and staff have access to the Encyclopedia Britannica online from any computer, at school or home.
We have integrated iPod Touches and iPads into grades PreK to grades 4. PreK and Kindergarten use the iPad and iPod Touch for learning many concepts such as colors, sorting, matching, numbers, counting, shapes, letters, and animals. Other students use these tools in the classroom to research, reinforce math concepts, read interactive books and increase their fluency skills.
We have a mobile laptop cart that our students use in their classrooms for research and project work. Students also have access to flip cameras and digital cameras to enhance book reports, projects and presentations.
Our teachers use the PowerTeacher Grade Book which allows parents to view their child’s grades, attendance and assignments online. There is also a PowerSchool for parents mobile app. With PowerSchool for Parents you can see live attendance, assignments, scores, grades and more, right from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
